Ancient Arts Childrens’ Camp @ Chimney Rock

Ancient Arts Childrens’ Camp

At Chimney Rock Archaeological Area

August 1st & 2nd, 2012

Hands On Arts Summer Camp for Children will be offering the Ancient Arts Camp at Chimney Rock Archaeological Area in partnership with Gregory Woods on August 1st & 2nd.

Kids will learn how to make an ancient Puebloan bowl using the same techniques and materials as the Ancient Ones!

Gregory S. will instruct the class and Ms. Lisa and Ms. Tessie will be his hands on assistants.  Gregory S. Wood has worked with clay for more than thirty five years. As a fifth-generation Colorado native, his ongoing work and research with archaeologists, museums, and on-site in the nation’s Four Corners region have taken on special meaning. He blends his intense interest in archaeology with ceramics, producing “true”, near flawless pottery replicas that speak for themselves. A strong commitment to using only prehistorically available native material, tools and techniques has earned him a reputation for archaeological authenticity.

This 2-Day class will only be available to 20 students in 3rd grade (entering 4th grade) to 7th grade.  The cost is $70 for 2 days (1 day class is also available for $35.00.) Tuition includes transportation, instruction, materials, and a tour of Chimney Rock.  The classes take place from 10:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.  On Thursday, parents are invited to attend a tour of Chimney Rock at 2:30 p.m. with their child. A special firing will take place on Sunday, July 5, providing there is not a fire ban, for all the pottery pieces made by children.
