I live to experience the natural world around me with a remarkable passion for the outdoors and travel. I spend the summer touring the country as the Get Out More Tour Ambassador, and was proud to be honored in 2015 as a recipient of the AIM Ambassador Award from Active Interest Media. I thrive on the opportunity to share my love and knowledge for the outdoors. I’ve enjoyed well over 10,000 miles of hiking and backpacking with trail miles in 49 of the 50 U.S. states (Hawaii coming soon). Long distance backpacking and extended periods in the wilderness feed my passion, I’ve thru-hiked the Appalachian Trail (GA-ME) and the American Discovery Trail (DE – CA) and compiled well over 1,000 tent-nights living out under the stars. The 2016 Get Out More Tour will be my eighth Tour traveling across the United States spreading my passion for exploring the outdoors while educating and inspiring audiences with tips and techniques designed to enhance their own outdoor experiences as I motivate them to Get Out More.
Favorite Sawyer Product and why:
Who doesn’t LOVE the Sawyer MINI Water Filter? I know I do! The MINI is the pinnacle of what I’ve seen as an evolutionary process at SAWYER. The fact that the MINI can be attached to the included collapsible drinking pouch, used inline on a hydration pack, attached to a standard soda bottle, or simply used with the included drinking straw to drink directly from the water source is an incredible culmination of specific user needs all packed in to an insanely light two ounce backpacker friendly designs. I’ve loved to witness the evolution of a product like SAWYER’s MINI, and I take a great deal of pride in being part of the evolutionary process thanks to the honor of being a Sawyer Ambassador. I’ve enjoyed numerous “brainstorming” sessions with the team at SAWYER and have greatly enjoyed watching the birth of products like their in-line hydration pack adapters and then seeing the integration of that in-line concept directly into future generations of their products like the MINI!
Favorite outdoor location:
Tough question, and a question I’d typically avoid by saying that I’ve been so fortunate to see so many amazing and awe-inspiring natural outdoor locations that it is almost impossible to compare the beauty that is found in outdoor locations like the foliage filled Maine Woods, the rocky red canyons of Southwest Utah and Arizona, the jagged peaks of the Cirque of the Towers in the Wind River Range of Wyoming, or the mesmerizing geologic make-up of South Dakota’s Badlands because they are all such unique natural experiences, but I’ll be a good sport and pick one spot that will always make my top backpacking destinations: The Enchantment in the Central Cascades of Washington.
One piece of advice or something you’ve learned spending so much time in the outdoors:
There is not a wrong way to do it. Sure, you need skills and gear and the knowledge to use it all, but in regards to style, hike your own hike. Figure out what exploring the outdoors means to you, go at your own pace, cater to your own comfort needs and create a style that enhances your own very personal connection with nature.
