About THE POLAR EXPRESS™ Train Ride
Now in its 13th year of operation in Durango, THE POLAR EXPRESS™Train Ride is one of the D&SNGRR’s premier special events of the year, and it continues to grow in popularity each holiday season. Based on the 1985 award-winning children’s book and New York Times bestseller by Chris Van Allsburg, and the 2004 Academy Award®-winning animated theatrical film of the same name featuring Tom Hanks, THE POLAR EXPRESS™ Train Ride brings to life the heartwarming tale of a child’s Christmas Eve journey to the North Pole aboard a historic steam locomotive. THE POLAR EXPRESS™ Train Ride passengers enjoy hot chocolate and interact with all the characters from the book, including the chefs, hobo, the Hero Boy, Billy, and the conductor, as the train makes its way to the North Pole to pick up Santa Claus. Once aboard, Santa Claus visits each car, gives each child a special gift, and leads event goers in specially-selected Christmas carols as the train heads back to Durango. THE POLAR EXPRESS™ Train Ride began on Friday, Nov. 17, and runs most days, with multiple excursions daily, through Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2018.
About The Christmas Tree Train
For the third consecutive year, the D&SNGRR’s Christmas tree train whisks guests to scenic Cascade Canyon and back to cut down their very own white fir trees for the holidays. The event iscoordinated in partnership with the San Juan Mountains Association (SJMA), a local nonprofit organization which promotes responsible care of natural and cultural resources through education and hands-on involvement that inspires respect and reverence for lands, and FireWise of Southwest Colorado, which strives to keep lives, homes, and property from being damaged by wildfire. At Cascade Canyon, SJMA and FireWise volunteers join D&SNGRR staff to assist passengers in selecting and cutting their Christmas trees in designated wilderness areas, which have been carefully selected by all parties for hazardous fuel reduction, and then tagging and loading them on the train back to Durango. In addition to their fares, riders also need to purchase tree-cutting permits for $8.00 each. The Christmas tree trains runs Nov. 25-26, Dec. 2-3, and Dec. 9-10, 2017.
About The New Year’s Day Brunch Train
For a trip reminiscent of turn-of-the-century travel, D&SNGRR premium-class passengers can ring in the new year on Monday, Jan. 1, 2018, with a delicious hot brunch buffet, live music, and a scrumptious array of mouthwatering desserts while traveling through the pristine snow-covered wilderness along the Animas River to Cascade Canyon. For those guests wanting to enjoy a wonderful New Year’s Day train ride without the extra festivities, the railroad offers standard coach seats with access to the concession car where snacks, hot and cold lunch items, beverages, cocktails, and souvenirs are available for purchase. During a 45-minute stop along the river at Cascade Canyon, guests can stroll to the footbridge, warm their hands by the pavilion’s rock fireplace, or relax and enjoy the winter scenery from the comfort of their passenger car.
