Help Durango Nordic Trails
A guest editorial by Dina Pesenson
As many of you know, Durango has a Nordic Center directly across the road from Purgatory downhill ski resort. Other than Enchanted Forest, it is the only full service nordic area in South Colorado providing groomed trails for xc skiing and snowshoe trails for snowshoeing as well as full rentals and events. They also allow fat bike riding on their trails in certain conditions.
Durango nordic trails have endured developments squeezing their trails for years. This year they are standing to lose a largest section yet of their beautiful nordic trails to more condo development.
If you feel strongly about this, a quick note to their county planner (and a cc to durango nordic) would go a long way. If you need ideas, you could express your love for and use of these trails, how often you go to Durango, point out that driving to Durango will be less appealing if the trail left is so small. Point out development’s environmental impacts and long term costs to the county (most developers are LLC for a reason) as well as negative impact on Durango outdoor recreation reputation when they choose development over existing, established, healthy, family friendly, affordable outdoor recreation option with minimal environmental impact.
Please do support them with a message if you can. Here is link with info on their page including county planner email and Durango Nordic Club email.
