This years three day horse camp was a wonderful success. We had 11 athletes of different ages and upwards of fifty volunteers that made this all possible. LASSO has been the proud sponsor of this three day equine event for the past six years. We have athletes from other states, but it is primarily geared to local participants. There are very few special olympic horse camps remaining in the country so we are very happy that we can hold this event here.
The facility is large and well cared for.
Jody McCalister has been the coach and Andrea Lyle is her assistant. They create a great challenge course and exercises for the participants ( as well as the volunteers) ! Each athlete is paired with a horse and a team of three people. There is always an experienced horse handler who leads, and two side walkers assist the athlete at all times. Volunteers rotate because it is a very hard three to four hour session each morning. This event is held the last full weekend of August each year.
LASSO provides the horses that are used for this three day event as well as other theraputic programs. More than half of the horses used are rescue horses awaiting permanent homes. They have undergone constant training and we ensure they will be very safe for each athelete. This event does provide a great opportunity for the public to visit LASSO and to see the horses needing new homes.
We welcome you to our facility at any time and the public is always welcome. Our facility is open Mon. – Sat. 10am. until 4pm. Appointments are preferred.
Our web site is lassohorserescue.org. and we welcome all interested people. Our organization is a recognized, all volunteer, 501-C3 non profit and donations are very much appreciated. This years drought conditions have placed an extreme hardship on our organization. Funding for hay would be greatly appreciated. Rescue horses not only need new homes, we need to ensure they are here for all our thearpy programs.
