No Kokanee Give-away This Year
Kokanee give-away canceled in Durango this year
DURANGO, Colo. – Colorado Parks and Wildlife will not be giving away kokanee salmon in Durango this year from Nighthorse Reservoir.
CPW harvests eggs from kokanee at reservoirs throughout Colorado every fall and sends them to its hatcheries. This year the egg-take has exceeded expectations and CPW’s hatcheries don’t have room for more eggs. Consequently, the fish won’t be spawned at Nighthorse Reservoir this year.
Statewide, CPW staff has harvested more than 10 million eggs this fall.
CPW’s hatcheries hold kokanee until they are a few inches in size. In April every year the fingerlings are released in 26 reservoirs throughout the state. Kokanee are a land-locked salmon and a favorite sport fish for anglers.
