Water lecture, safe food film and Spanish classes

            This evening (Thursday, September 27) from6 – 7:15 p.m., Denise Rue-Pastin will speak on the state of Colorado’s water as the third talk in the library’s free fall Lifelong Learning lecture series.  She is an adjunct environmental sociology professor and has been the Water Information Program Coordinator for the nine-county Dolores/San Juan River Basin, based inDurango, since 2006. Prior to that, she was the Water Conservation Program Director for PAWS for seven years.  In this capacity Denise was instrumental in reducing community water use by 17 percent.  In addition to speaking, she will be happy to answer your questions on environmental water issues.

            Tomorrow afternoon (Friday, September 28) from2-4 p.m.we show the latest film, “The Future of Food,” in our Politics of Food and Health film series.  Genetic engineering of food crops is as controversial today as ever, as many of the large agro corporations that use this technology position themselves as the answer to the world’s food crisis and further consolidate the seed supply.  Come watch this film and decide for yourself.

Spanish class is full

            Our basic Conversational Spanish class that started yesterday (Wednesday, September 26) is totally full, with a waiting list of 11 people and more phoning to be included.  We are delighted that it is such a success but sorry to disappoint so many people who wanted to participate.  Tiffany promises to arrange another class in January to accommodate the overflow demand.

 

Nonfiction

            “No Easy Day: The Auto biography of a Navy Seal” by Mark Owen is a firsthand account of the mission that killed Osama Bin Laden from a man who was there. This is the book that has been generating such heavy media coverage.  “Hope Solo” is the memoir of Hope Solo, the talented member of theU.S. women’s soccer team, who tells of the many difficulties she faced with her family, especially her father.

 

Mysteries and thrillers

            “Garment of Shadows” by Laurie R. King is a suspense story featuring Sherlock Holmes and his wife Mary Russell.  “The Tombs” by Clive Cussler and Thomas Perry is the latest in the thriller series featuring Sam and Remi Fargo.  “Buffalo Bill’s Dead Now” by Margaret Coel is a mystery incorporating Native American culture into the story.

 

Other new novels

            “The Storms of Denali” by Nicholas O’Connell is a powerful story about climbers facing such well-described adventures that you will think you are reading a memoir.  “TheInn atRoseHarbor” by Debbie Macomber is a new series based in thePacific Northwest town ofCedar Cove featuring guests at a cozy inn.  “Mercy Kill” by Aaron Allston is the latest in the Star Wars X-Wing series.  “Tiger’s Claw” by Dale Brown explores the possibility thatAmerica may lose its military superiority asChina increases its naval presence in the Pacific.  “The Forgetting Tree” by Tatjana Soli is a novel looking at how where cultures collide in a remote citrus ranch.

            “The Darling Dahlias and the Confederate Rose” by Susan Wittig Albert is a mystery in the Darling Dahlias series.  “The Beautiful Mystery” by Louise Penny is the latest in the Chief Inspector Gamache series.  “Garment of Shadows” by Laurie R. King is a mystery featuring Sherlock Holmes and his wife Mary Russell.  “Bones are Forever” by Kathy Reichs is the latest in the series featuring forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan.  “Robert B. Parker’s Fool Me Twice” by Michael Brandman is the latest in the series featuring Jesse Stone and the Paradise PD.  “ASunlessSea” by Anne Perry is the latest in the series featuring William Monk, commander of the River Police.
