TWO TRAIL CLOSURES ENACTED IN AREA OF LITTLE SAND FIRE

PAGOSA SPRINGS – The Little Sand Fire, which was started by lightning on Sunday, May 13, is now estimated at 10 acres in the Sand Bench area approximately 14 air miles northwest of Pagosa Springs. The fire is being monitored by a U.S. Forest Service firefighting crew, which reported increased activity yesterday afternoon with isolated torching. The fire is moving in an upslope and up-canyon direction through heavy dead and downed fuels.

The Little Sand Fire is located on the southeast end of Sand Bench, east of the Piedra Area, west of Sally’s Overlook and is visible from Deadman’s Curve on Piedra Road.  The Lower Weminuche Trail #595 and Little Sand Trail #591 have been closed, and signs are posted in the area. At this time, fire managers on the Pagosa Ranger District are managing the wildfire for its natural resource benefits to allow the naturally ignited fire to burn within a remote, defined area.
